"Top 10" Bread Questions

Why are your loaves round?

Round loaves stay fresher longer!   The round shape allows for a moister, more even bake, without greasy pans.   Since we knead every loaf by hand, round loaves are perfect for creating beautiful designs—which make each loaf a hand-crafted, truly unique, one-of-a-kind gift.

Is your bread like health food store bread?

Nope!   We just bake wonderful-tasting, fresh loaves which also happen to be good for you!   Our basic breads have little to no fat and are high in fiber, which definitely makes us popular with doctors, health professionals, and weight loss clinics.

Do you slice?

We prefer not to slice our bread ahead of time because it doesn’t stay moist and fresh quite as long.  Our motto is:  “People who make odd-shaped sandwiches have more fun.”  When you slice it yourself, you have the freedom of choosing—hmm, “a big thick hunk to go with my bowl of soup”, or “I want mine extra thin today!”   And finally, we like to sell lots of HOT loaves, which we can’t run through a slicer.

What does the word "wheat" mean on a label?

Bread labeled simply as "wheat" bread usually contains a mixture of about 75 percent enriched white flour and 25 percent whole wheat flour, and is therefore NOT considered a "whole grain" food.   Look for the words "100% whole wheat" or "whole wheat" in the list of ingredients.  Also, since ingredients are listed in volume order, the closer "whole wheat" is to the top of the list, the better.

How can I tell which Great Harvest breads are "whole grain"?   Breads which are 100% whole grain are marked with a wheat stalk on our menu, or marked with a "whole grain" stamp on the bread sign in the store.     These breads are 100% whole grain, and sweetened with either honey or molasses.   Our freshly milled flour uses 100% of the wheat berry - ALL of which ends up in your loaf, for the absolute best fiber and nutrition!!!

What’s “Golden Wheat” bread?      Well, first we have to talk a little about wheat varieties...  The whole-wheat grain we traditionally use (such as in our Honey Whole Wheat) is a hard RED spring wheat, grown in the northern plains of Montana.   However, there is another variety of wheat we also use, called WHITE wheat.   "White wheat" is 100% whole-grain, but with a lighter texture, and slightly sweeter, nuttier flavor than the traditional red wheat.   Lots of kids find they love this bread, (which makes their moms very happy!!) So now you might be asking...."How can I get a hold of some of this great stuff??"  Just check our menu.

And here's your answer:  "Golden Wheat" is a basic 100% whole-wheat bread made using flour made from "white wheat".  "Golden Wheat" is 100% whole-grain.
